Programme overview:

Improve your Māori language skills while enhancing your knowledge of tikanga practices.

At this level you’ll be able to use appropriate phrases to help you navigate various situations and show an understanding of your connection to the land, people, places, histories and stories.

Learn from our expert kaiako and build your confidence to communicate using te reo Māori at an intermediate level.

This is our part-time study option that allows you to increase your knowledge of te reo Māori while remaining flexible to your lifestyle.

When you pass this programme, you'll get this qualification:

  • Te Pōkaitahi Reo (Rumaki, Reo Rua) Kaupae 3 - New Zealand Certificate in Te Reo (Rumaki, Reo Rua) Level 3

You'll learn about:

  • using a variety of sentence structures
  • using te reo Māori in a range of formal and informal situations 
  • using different waiata and karakia 
  • understand and practice Māori tikanga 

Entry criteria:

To enrol in this programme, a potential student must:

  • be at least 16 years of age
  • be a New Zealand citizen or resident (or citizen of Australia, Tokelau, Niue or the Cook Islands
  • reside in New Zealand
  • have successfully completed a te reo Māori qualification at level 2, or
  • attend an information sharing evening with a Kaiako to determine the applicant’s level of te reo Māori

Delivery & Workload

This is a part-time programme that consists of 60 credits, taught over 38 weeks. Throughout the programme you will be required to attend:

  • Weekly classes to be determined by kaiako (2.6 hours per week)

You’ll also need to complete set activities outside of class which will take approximately:

  • 14 hours of learning per week

As some of the programme activities need to be completed online, you’ll need to have access to an internet-connected device.

Help keep te reo Māori alive by sharing what you know with your whānau, friends and work colleagues. Your improved te reo Māori capabilities will complement other skills and strengths you have in personal and professional settings.


Kōnae Ako (Learning Modules):

Reremahi | 15 Credits

Demonstrate the ability to correctly use tense markers in sentence structures in written and verbal forms at an intermediate level. Range must include: Kei te, I, I te, Kua, Ka, E…ana

Tōku Ao | 15 Credits

Demonstrate ability to correctly use instructional language in sentence structures in written and verbal forms at an intermediate level.

Whakakāhoretanga | 15 Credits

Demonstrate ability to correctly use forms of negation in sentence structures in written and verbal forms at an intermediate level. Range must include:

  • Kāore…i te Kāore….i Kāore…e
  • Kāore anō…kia

Rerehāngū | 15 Credits

Demonstrate ability to correctly use active and passive sentence structures in written and verbal forms at an intermediate level.
